Speaker Highlight: Former Congressmen Ed Towns and Cliff Stearns to Speak at Congressional & Legislative Luncheon During MMTC’s Access to Capital and Telecom Policy Conference
The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council is proud to announce that former U.S. Representatives Edolphus Towns (D-NY) and Cliff Stearns (R-FL) will speak during the Congressional & Legislative Luncheon on Day 1 of our 11th Annual Access to Capital and Telecom Policy Conference, which will be held July 9th and 10th, 2013.
Both congressmen have worked closely with MMTC in the past, volunteering to co-chair the newly-formed Telecom and Internet Policy Taskforce in a show of bipartisan efforts toward meaningful telecom policy reform.
Throughout 2012, MMTC collaborated with a number of bipartisan parties to investigate whether there was a need to rewrite Congress’ current telecommunications policy. As a result of these meetings, the parties decided to move forward with advocating for telecom policy reform, thus forming the Taskforce to design and advocate for telecom and Internet policy reform through legislation, rulemaking, executive orders, public-private partnerships, and best practices.
Reps. Towns and Stearns enthusiastically joined forces to head the Taskforce.
Before retiring earlier this year, Congressman Towns gained more than thirty years of experience as a policymaker. Over the course of his long and distinguished career, Congressman Towns brought millions of dollars to a wide range of projects in the Borough of Brooklyn and the City of New York.
In the 112th Congress, Congressman Towns served as a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and in the 111th Congress, he served as Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. In 2010, Congressman Towns inaugurated the Congressional Social Work Caucus, which he chaired until his January retirement.
Congressman Stearns gained nearly 25 years of experience in Congress, championing such issues as extending technology privacy protection and improving renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. In the last two years of his tenure, Stearns served as Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.
Today, Stearns serves as a Senior Adviser in APCO’s Washington office and a member of the firm’s international advisory council, a group of former politicians and executives who advise APCO clients on international issues.
