MMTC’s 10th Annual Access to Capital and Telecom Policy Conference

The Broadband and Social Justice Blog was created by the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC) to promote diversity and inclusion in the media, telecom, and broadband industries, and to facilitate universal broadband access, adoption, and informed use in multicultural communities.

Shankar Arumugavelu Shankar Arumugavelu is the Chief Information Officer for Verizon Wireless. In this role, Arumugavelu heads the company’s Information Technology strategy, its systems portfolio development, and operation of all supporting infrastructure. Prior to his current role, Arumugavelu held several other positions with Verizon, including chief information officer for Verizon’s consumer and mass business group. Before he joined Verizon, Arumugavelu worked for GTE Data Services as Executive Director of the Provisioning and Activation Systems group, working his way up to that position in 2002 after just five years with the company.

People's Hero of the Week

Girls Who Code Girls Who Code is a new nonprofit organization created to educate, inspire, and equip 13- to 17-year-old girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in technology and engineering. The organization works with leading educators, mentors, and engineers to provide high-touch mentorship and intensive instruction in robotics, Web design, and mobile development. The organization was founded by Reshma Saujani, the former Deputy Public Advocate of New York City, and includes a Brain Trust with representation from such organizations as Women Innovate Mobile and Personal Democracy Media.

Digital Entrepreneur of the Week

Jamarlin Martin Jamarlin Martin is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Moguldom Media Group, the world’s largest network of owned and operated digital brands focusing on African Americans as measured by comScore online reach. Moguldom Owns and operates several digital properties and content sites, including Madame Noire, Bossip, and Hip Hop Wired, generating over 88 million page views per month. Prior to his founding of Moguldom, Martin founded and managed a currency trading and financial markets blog, The Detached Trader. A lawyer by training, Martin has also worked as a paralegal for a private law firm.

Hackers Hackers of all types have made BBSJ’s Digital Divider list more than any other divider. While it may seem redundant, it is unfortunately a sign of hackers performing more and more security breaches in this new age where every scrap of vital personal information is digitized in some way. In recent weeks, Yahoo, LinkedIn, eHarmony, Formspring, and U.S. semiconductor manufacturer Nvidia Corp. have all reported serious security breaches that compromised the personal information of millions of users. The encrypted passwords of over 400,000 users were stolen from Nvidia alone. While the stolen information seems innocuous at first – after all, the Nvidia passwords only grant users access to the company’s forums – the repercussions can be dire. Many people use the same password across several sites, including those for banking, taxes, and other areas that store highly sensitive personal information – which can be used to steal a user’s identity. And while word is spreading for people to use different passwords for different sites, millions are still uninformed and at risk, and millions more prefer to just remain offline.
