#MMTC15 Highlight: Access to Capital Awards Reception Featuring ‘Kingonomics’ Creator Rodney Sampson, Producer Debra Martin Chase, and More!

On July 16th, from 5:45 pm to 8:00 pm, MMTC presents its closing Access to Capital Awards Reception, where MMTC will present its highest awards to those who have made exceptional contributions to diversity and inclusion in the media and telecom industries.

Hall of Fame Inductees include:

Rodney Sampson, a social innovator, angel investor, published author, and consecrated bishop. A serial entrepreneur, Sampson created Opportunity Ecosystem, the nation’s leading platform for minorities and under-served communities to master the investment ecosystem. He co-founded the Legacy Opportunity Fund portfolio of companies, with investments in technology, energy, consumer products, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. He is also the author and creator of the “Kingonomics,” the definitive access to capital platform providing access to expert knowledge and expert practitioners in innovation, entrepreneurship and investment. In addition to his induction into our Hall of Fame, Sampson will be delivering keynote remarks during our Access to Capital Awards Luncheon on at 12:30 July 16th!

Debra Martin Chase, an Emmy nominated and Peabody Award winning television and motion picture producer whose company, Martin Chase Productions, has been affiliated with the Walt Disney Company since 2001 and been based at the ABC Television Network since 2012. Martin Chase has spent years working toward diversity and inclusion in film and television, influencing perceptions of minorities and women through her work. She has served as an executive producer for numerous blockbuster movie franchises, films, and documentaries including The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Cheetah Girls, The Princess Diaries, The Preacher’s Wife, Courage Under Fire, and Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream. Her new romantic sitcom, Zoe Ever After, starring Brandy Norwood, is scheduled to begin airing early next year. Prior to receiving her award, Martin Chase will engage in a one-on-one interview with MMTC President and CEO Kim Keenan during “A Conversation with a Media Mogul: Accessing Capital and Reversing Stereotypes of People of Color” at 5:45 pm.

Floyd Mori, an advocate whose career spans a lifetime of dedication toward promoting equal rights and advocacy for Asian Americans. Currently, Mori is the President and CEO of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS), an organization dedicated to promoting Asian Pacific American participation and representation at all levels of the political process, from community service to elected office. In addition to this role, Mori serves as a member of the Diversity Council for Comcast NBCU and is on the board of the Independent Voters Project. Most recently, Mori held various local and national positions for the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the nation’s oldest and largest Asian-American civil and human rights organization, including four years as National President and four years as Vice President. He has also served as chair of the National Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) and has been on the Executive Council of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (LCCR).

Extraordinary Service Awardees Include:

Jacqueline G. Clary, the Director of Program Network Policy at the National Cable & Telecommunications Association. Prior to joining NCTA, Jacqueline pent years as a media and telecom policy attorney for MMTC, advocating on behalf of minorities, women, and other marginalized communities. Over the course of her years of service, she held a variety of positions with MMTC, including Assistant Policy Director, Senior Counsel, and John W. Jones Fellow. Clary specializes in evolving policy areas in media and telecommunications at the federal level and has extensive experience in civil rights advocacy in the media, telecommunications, and broadband industries.

Kiri Laurelle Davis, a producer and director of several short films that address important social issues. In 2012, Davis began production on her first feature documentary, a film that takes an inside look at youth of color, lost, exploited, and targeted within the justice system. She is also the creator of the Just Us Project, a multimedia platform that actively addresses social justice issues through media, art, and community outreach. In 2005, at age 16, Davis created the award-winning short documentary “A Girl Like Me,” which has been featured in more than 20 film festivals including the Tribeca Film Festival. Davis’s recent PSA, “Our Lives Matter,” will be featured during the Access to Capital Awards Reception. Davis is a two-time recipient of MMTC’s Extraordinary Service Award, in 2007 and 2015.

Jason Llorenz, a professor, researcher and advocate with over a decade of federal and state-level policy development, strategic communications, and legal experience. His research interests focus on digital literacy and universal inclusion in the digital economy, telecommunications and Internet policy, and the role of digital and social media in the innovation economy. Llorenz’s writing appears in the Huffington Post, and he is often sought for comment on the issues facing the digital divide and universal digital inclusion. Llorenz is a member of MMTC’s Board of Advisors, and is board member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Alumni Association. In addition to receiving this award, Llorenz will provide his insights during the panel “Investing Locally, Empowering Globally: The Tech Landscape Beyond the Valley” at 2:30 on July 16th.
